What is EMDR?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps people heal from trauma and other distressing life experiences. Rather than relying solely on talking through experiences, EMDR works by helping the brain process and integrate memories that may feel “stuck.”
When difficult or overwhelming experiences aren’t fully processed, they can continue to show up in the present - through anxiety, emotional overwhelm, negative beliefs, distressing intrusive thoughts, or feeling “triggered” in ways that don’t fully make sense. EMDR helps the brain reprocess those experiences so they are no longer as intense or disruptive.
At its core, EMDR supports your brain’s natural ability to heal. In many ways, it creates space for your own inner wisdom and intuitive processing to guide the work - without forcing or overanalyzing every detail.
The Process
How EMDR Works
Everyone’s experience is a little different, but the process is designed to move at a pace that feels safe and manageable, with grounding and support built in.

The Mechanics of Healing
During EMDR, you’ll briefly bring attention to a distressing memory while also engaging in a form of bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements, tapping, or buzzers). This process helps activate the brain’s natural healing system, allowing memories to be processed and integrated in a new, more adaptive way.
Control and Shifts
You remain fully aware and in control throughout the process. EMDR is not about reliving your experiences in an overwhelming way. Instead, many people notice thoughts, images, emotions, or body sensations begin to shift over time, with less intensity than before.
Natural Integration
Some describe it as watching pieces of a memory change or become easier to hold. Others notice new insights or connections emerging. In many ways, EMDR is less about forcing change and more about allowing your mind to process and make sense of what’s already there - often in a way that feels natural and intuitive.
